Cricket happened! On a fascinating day at Lord's in London, England and Australia fought it out to take the early initiative after losing the first day of the second Ashes 2019 Test to rain. Aussies, courtesy Josh Hazlewood, dominated the early hours on Thursday but the hosts found their own fighters in Rory Burns and Jonny Bairstow to drag the score to 258. Hazlewood got able support from Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon -- all three taking three wickets each. For England, Burns top-scored with 53, one more than Bairstow's effort.

Earlier...

Majority of Test matches are still played over five days, including the oldest of them all -- The Ashes. Well, that might have just saved the second Test match between England and Australia. Day 1 of the match was washed out with miserable weather holding players, fans and officials to the ransom. Not even toss was allowed. (Cricket News)

But Day 2 is expected to be dry despite looming clouds. So expect some play, and most importantly the toss to happen. With that, at least, there will be some semblance of a cricket match happening at the home of the sport, Lord's. With full 90 overs lost on Day 1, additional eight overs will be added to each of the remaining four days. But again, the forecast for Friday and Saturday are not good.

Odds

Yesterday, amid the downpour, indomitable Jofra Archer got the Test cap for his adopted country even as Josh Hazlewood saw off competition from Mitchell Starc to make the Australia XI. Hopefully, these four days will be enough to get a result.

Yes, we have seen both England and Australia winning matches in fewer days. Can they do it against each other with stakes so high?

Team Previews

England

The lack of wickets in the middle overs is something that has hurt England ever since the ODI world cup. The team has chosen to move away from Liam Plunkett, who was so good in that role and does not have a great replacement ready.

The first match is a perfect example of how this is making life difficult for England. Australia was 123 for 5 in 23.4 overs but England could not get another breakthrough till the 44th over by which time the score had improved to 249.

There was not much resistance from Australia after that wicket fell and just showed what an opportunity England let go. The form of its opening bowlers, especially the pace of Jofra Archer, was impressive and is going to test Australia again.

Adil Rashid is a real force in the middle-overs as well. Moeen Ali had a rough game and has been struggling with his bowling for quite some time now. He is not currently good enough to be playing as a fifth bowler especially when England has no other part-timers to turn to.

England’s batting is deep and very powerful. Bairstow and Billings mounted an excellent counter-attack in the previous match against Australia. We can expect some more contributions from Roy, Buttler, and Morgan in this match which should help England quite a lot.

England Playing 11

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, JE Root, Eoin Morgan, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Jos Buttler, Sam Billings, CR Woakes, AU Rashid, Jofra Archer.

Australia

A brilliant spell of bowling from Josh Hazelwood set the scene for Australia’s victory in our opinion. Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell batted well to get Australia to 294 but that is a very chase-able total in England.

England Australia Live Odds For Today

Australia seems to be struggling to be able to keep up with England at the moment. They are unlikely to have Steve Smith available to them for this match or even the final one and so their batting is compromised.

David Warner is struggling for form, Aaron Finch looks close to getting out at all times, and Alex Carey looks out of place. Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, and Glenn Maxwell are leading the charge for Australia at the moment.

The Australia batting is strong but it is nowhere near as dangerous as England’s. The current form

of the Aussie players looks pretty poor as well.

Where Australia matches England (and is even slightly better) is the bowling. Josh Hazelwood is bowling beautifully while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Adam Zampa are asking tough questions as well. Zampa is constantly under attack from the England players but he comes coming back at them.

Add Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Marsh to the mix and Australia has seven good bowling options at its disposal. That is a far more flexible bowling attack than England’s and is going to keep them in the contest at all times.
